A young boy, Richard, is left with a serious mental problem after a WWII bomb explodes on a bomb site, whee he is playing with two friends. One of the friends is killed and the other friend, Alice, feels responsible. As time passes, the difference between the real world and Richard's world becomes incresingly smaller and which is which becomes the conundrum. Richard 's world also becomes the world of Alice and Smith as Richard seeks to escape the restrictions of his life and his mind.
